Game Time

Students had such an amazing day! Even though it was a very exciting day, they did great listening  and particularly cleaning up our classroom! Way to go Room 3! We earned ourself another class reward!!! Students voted and they decided they wanted to do a game time together on Tuesday afternoon. Students are allowed to bring in a relatively simple game with not too many pieces. Some ideas are jenga, connect four, etc. Students will be responsible for taking care of their game and  not losing pieces.

Halloween Parade

Ask your child about our school wide Halloween Parade and dance party in the gym today. Happy Halloween and stay safe trick or treating tonight! Your child will also be coming home with a  MAPPS notebook and pen they can keep.

Witch's Brew Recipe

Image
What fun and exciting day we had! We followed a recipe  to make "witch's brew" with a partner. Some students wrote the recipe out so they could do it at  home too. Next week, we will be writing our very own recipe! Please have your child follow a simple recipe to make something that they can write about. Here are some ideas they came up with: Make a sandwich Make crackers and cheese Make popcorn Make cereal It needs only a few ingredients and probably no more than 6 steps. This is also a great way to foster independence in your child! You can even encourage them to take responsibility of  starting to pack their own morning snack. Here are some photos of students creating our witch's brew:

Our Unique Pumpkin Pattern Art

Image
On Monday and Tuesday, we read the story "Spookley the Square Pumpkin", about a uniquely shaped pumpkin who realized that, although he was different, it was what made him special.  We created our own pumpkins of a variety of shapes  and used our math learning of patterns  to make them even more interesting. We, also, did some writing about what makes us unique and special! Ask your child to point out their art piece and tell you about their writing.

Today's Adventures and reminder re Halloween/Flashlights

Spooky Flashlight Reading and Halloween Parade Tomorrow! Reminder:  Children can wear costumes tomorrow for Halloween.  Please no scary makeup, face masks or weapons.    Kids should also bring a flashlight for their literacy group. Today we had a fire drill and the students did well.   Math: The grade ones continued to practice their repeating patterns and identifying errors that others have made in their patterns.  The grade twos were exploring increasing and decreasing patterns by using a T chart.   Social Studies We continued our conversation about changes in our families.  Today we focused on Moving.  We read a book called A Kiss Goodbye by the same author as the Kissing Hand .  We talked about feelings, positive and negative changes that occur when we move.    *****Reminder that there is NO school on Friday November 1 as it is a PD day!

Communication Folders

A folder for communication will be coming home in your child's backpack for communication between school and home. Please keep in your child's backpack for us to send home notices and work.  We do not have the time in our day to check them every day so if you are sending something in for the teacher, please tell your child so they can bring it to the teacher first thing in the morning.

Sense of Touch

Image
Today, we looked at our sense of touch. We are coming home with descriptive words for the texture of objects. You do not need to return this sheet, it is yours to keep.

Descriptive words in our Writing

Image
Today we learned about using describing words (also known as adjectives or "juicy words") to enhance our writing. Check out some of our writing using describing words for fun outfits we would like to dress up in! Next, we will incorporate our Science learning coming up with a whole variety of describing words for each of our senses, smell, taste, touch, hearing and sight. Great writing today Room 3! Also, students were able to find the mistake Ms. McCullough made in their worksheet! They really know their days of the week well!

Comprehension Strategies for Reading

Image
Room 3 has also been working on reading strategies using CAFE: C omprehension A ccuracty F luency E xpanding Vocabulary We are developing strategies in each of these areas and will work towards creating our own goals for reading in these areas. In developing Comprehension ,  one strategy we have learned  is to  Check for Understanding while reading. This is when we take a pause during reading and think about who  the story is about and what is happening in the story. Here is some great information for parents to help with working on comprehension during reading times at home:

We earned a class reward for Friday!  Students decided that their reward would be to bring a teddy bear 🧸  or stuffie in!  Please label your teddy bear on a tag so there’s no mix ups.  It’s sure to be an exciting day for our teddy bears to come to school and learn with us!

Mindfulness and Movement Breaks

Image
We will be sharing assessments and work throughout the year to provide parents with a picture of how their child is doing in their learning. Our first assessment was of how students participated in  our Mindfulness and Movement Breaks. These breaks are to help students be the best learner they can be.  A Movement Break gives their bodies an opportunity for movement when they have been sitting for long periods of time  and helps to refocus. Our Mindfulness Breaks after lunch help when they have had lot of excitement and need an opportunity to calm their body's back down to be great learners. Please review the form with your child, sign and return to school tomorrow.

Thursday Math

Image
In math we explored some Esti-Mysteries.  The students loved them.     What is Subitizing? Simply put, subitizing is the ability to recognize a small group of objects without counting. It is a fundamental skill in the development of number sense.  I find that using a real-life example often helps in understanding certain concepts so let’s give it a try.  Last week I baked some sugar cookies. If I were to take four of these cookies and place them on a plate I would know there are 4 on the plate without having to count each one individually. This is because I have a “stable mental image” of the pattern of 4.  I can move the cookies around in different positions on the plate and still know there are 4 cookies. Since I have the ability to subitize I don’t have to count each cookie (1-2-3-4) to know there are 4. Today we played Splat to practice this skill.  Another fun activity. Ideas for Practice at Home Try to find stuff around the house to pract

Weird Wednesday

Today was a busy day with Music and Gym. Talk to your child about the exciting things happening in their reading groups.  In Social Studies we read "When I grow up" by Julie Chen and "When I grow up" by Andrew Daddo.  We had an interesting discussion around " What can my future self do that I can't do now?"  It was a very entertaining conversation.  Try to ask your child what some of their ideas were.   In Math we finished up our patterning stations and continued to explore labelling our patterns as well as identifying the core.   Informational Items - Please make sure you submit your Scholastic orders by the end of the week. - Please don't forget to do Home Reading.  Please remind your child to return and change their books. - Reminder that there is no school on Friday October 11 and Monday October 14th - Spirit Day - Plenty of Patterns Day on Wed Oct 16th - If your child is in the Bucket Drumming club, they will be performing at th

Thankful Writing

Image
Tuesday, we read the book  "Thanks for Thanksgiving", a story about all the things a child was thankful for. As we read the story, we discussed the things we were thankful for  as well, from our family to sports children get to play to our cozy houses to the good food  we get to eat to the fun we have in our snowy weather! Students followed the story pattern of beginning each sentence with "Thanks for" as they wrote the things they were thankful for. Some were able to elaborate on what they were thankful by adding the reasons why or by adding describing words!

Sight Poem

Connecting to our Science exploration of the our sight,  this week's poem is about what we can see. Students enjoyed last week trying to create their own parts of a poem that this week we will look further at word families  and add to our weekly poem. I See I see a dog. I see a hog. I see a cat. I see a hat. I see a truck. I see a duck. I see a toy. I see a cowboy. I see ____________________. I see ____________________. I see ____________________. I see ____________________. I see ____________________. I see ____________________. At home, some children are working on reading the poem while others will want to create their own fun rhyming words to add to the poem with more complexity.
