Story Writing

Today we finished our first story! We began with brainstorming characters and settings and descriptive words for both. We came up with ideas for either a lost story or a stuck story. We thought of 3 ways our character  could try to solve the problem, finally solving it on the third try! Then we came up with interesting ways to end our story such as the character's feelings, a lesson learned or a reflection. We are very proud of our hard work and look forward to sharing our stories at conferences with you in March!

The First Great Lesson

Image
Today, we had our Montessori First Great Lesson,  The Beginning of the Universe and Earth. The students were very engaged in  the story and the presentations such as the Great Bang, the creation of stars, solar system, matter on earth and volcanos.   Ask your child what they learned and what was most interesting to them. Next week, we will begin the Second Great Lesson, Life Comes to Earth.

100 day celebration

Dear Parents, We will be celebrating the 100 th  day of school  Thursday, February 20 .    For homework, please have your child collect 100 of an object (e.g.  100 piece of cereal, 100 noodles, 100 paper squares, 100 dots, etc).  Please put the objects in a  sandwich  sized ziploc bag  with their name on it.  If you happen to have a collection of 100 things that does not fit in the bag, please take a picture and put it in the bag.  For example, your child may have 100 cars.    On Thursday we will be using these bags to do some math related activities so please ensure that they are at school by Thursday. Thanks for helping us have a great 100th day!! Megan

Feb 12 Valentines Exchange

On February 12, students are welcome to bring Valentine Cards to school if they choose. If your child does choose to participate, please have them bring one for each student in their class. Please do not send any candy or food with the Valentines to school. Any food or candy that arrives at the school will not be sent home with other children, it will be returned to its origin. Thank you for your understanding. We will be doing some Valentine’s Day activities that are connected to the curriculum, but we will not be having a Valentine’s Day party.   See your email for a list of first names for the Valentines.

Starting Story Writing

Image
We started story writing today and the class did amazing! We came up with wonderful story starters to begin our story. We shared tons of great ideas for characters  and settings along with "juicy" words  to describe our character and setting. Here are some of our first pages of our stories of students who wanted to share! Tomorrow we will begin our problem and  attempts to solve the problem!

Growth Mindset

As we have been working to achieve goals in our learning, we talk about the importance of self talk. Having positive self talk can enable us to have a growth mindset instead of a fixed mindset. Coming home is a worksheet children did to differentiate between a growth mindset and a fixed mindset self talk. Let them explain growth mindset and fixed mindset to you. Parents please sign and return this worksheet. It is great when your child is trying something new or challenging to discuss their self talk  and whether they are expressing a growth mindset or a fixed mindset.

Community Homework

My Community This week, we will be discussing and recording what community we live in and what is found in our community. Please help your child learn the name of their community and talk about what is in their community (i.e. parks, schools, community center, stores). You could record this and place a note in your child's communication folder if they are having difficulties remembering.
